El Camino's Evans talks recruiting

A shutdown corner who can lock up one side of the field is very important and El Camino CB Mike Evans (5-9, 182) is just such a player. He was one of the top DB performers at the JCFootball.com combine held this past weekend at Cerritos College and he updated us on things including his offers as well as the possibility that he may leave this summer.

"I was a full-qualifier so I could leave anytime actually," Evans told JCFootball.com while taking a breather from the one-on-ones held on the Cerritos Stadium field. "I got overlooked because of my size. Iowa was recruiting me, but it sorta fell through so I headed to Elco."

Even though he isn't the biggest guy on the field, Evans has excellent speed, quickness and leaping ability. He posted a 3.9 short-shuttle at the combine while also putting up 185 pounds 19 times on the bench.

As a freshman for the Warriors, Evans posted solid numbers notching 19 tackles and two pass breakups while playing in the corner rotation.

"I feel I can both cover and hit," Evans said. "A lot of corners can do one or the other, but I can do both pretty well

"I really want to work on my ‘off' coverage and how I play in zone. We watch a lot of film and that helps me a lot, but we're working on everything really."

On the recruiting front now, Memphis has offered Evans and there's a chance he could leave early if the situation is right.

"I can leave this summer because I'm a full-qualifier so that's something I'm going to look at," Evans said. "Memphis definitely wants me early and I heard that Miami and Oregon State might want to do that too and Texas A&M and Boise State are both very interested so I'm just going to wait and see what happens there."

Should Evans decide to leave early, he would have four years to play three starting this fall, but if he stays he'll sign with a team in December and he'll have three years to play two when he steps on campus.

We'll continue to track Evans' progress over the coming weeks and months and update things as they happen.
