New schools coming on for Russell

When we profiled Pierce College CB Chaz Russell (6-0, 200) back in April, he was just starting to hear from a handful of four-year schools. Now he's become even more popular and there is a chance he could end up at a four-year school this fall if he completes the five classes he's enrolled in this summer. Read on to find out about his progress and what schools have shown more interest...

"I already have offers from Memphis and Middle Tennessee and they both want me to come in this fall if I can get in," Russell told JCFootball.com recently. "I have to complete five classes, so I'm going to have to get it done, but there is a chance I could end up at a four-year school this fall."

With those two offers in his back pocket, Russell is also hearing from schools like USC, Arizona, Oregon State, California, Nevada, Minnesota, Florida International and Boise State.

"I'm open to everyone that wants to recruit me," Russell noted. "I just want the chance to play and it doesn't really matter where that is."

While he's been hard at work in the classroom, Russell hasn't forgotten to put in the time in the weight room and on the field this spring as well.

"I'm running and working out every day," Russell said. "I've got my forty to a 4.4 and my bench is at 295 and I plan to have that higher before this fall.

"Last year was my first year ever playing defense so it was a bit of an adjustment for me, so I want to get my footwork to be better so I won't waste steps and I can start just reacting to stuff instead of thinking."

Despite missing one game because of a hip injury, Russell still managed to post 35 tackles, 11 passes broken up and one interception.

Should he make it to a four-year school this fall Russell will have four years to play three when he steps on campus. If not, then he will sign in December and he'll have three years to play two after the season.
