Could Russell leave early to the MAC?

L.A. Pierce College CB Chaz Russell is one of the top cover-men in the JC ranks and he's been working hard in the classroom to make himself available to sign this summer. Recently a MAC school has come into the picture and he could take an official visit there in the next few weeks and enroll once he's done with his summer classes.

"Akron called me and said they wanted to offer me," Russell told recently. "They wanted me to get my transcripts faxed over to them and if everything checks out then they want me to trip out there and check things out.

"A guy I went to high school with is already out there so I know someone out there and that makes it pretty appealing, plus I would be able to play three years of D-1 and that would be huge."

Memphis and Middle Tennessee are also in the picture as two schools who would like to see him enroll this fall, but at this point it's Akron or he could end up staying and signing this December.

"I'm running and working out every day," Russell said. "I've got my forty to a 4.4 and my bench is at 295 and I plan to have that higher before this fall.

"Last year was my first year ever playing defense so it was a bit of an adjustment for me, so I want to get my footwork to be better so I won't waste steps and I can start just reacting to stuff instead of thinking."

Despite missing one game because of a hip injury, Russell still managed to post 35 tackles, 11 passes broken up and one interception.

We'll continue to track Russell's progress and update things as they change.
