Watts makes plays on defense for Butte

Butte LB/DE John Watts (6-3, 235) is a defensive playmaker with outstanding speed and abilities. He's already hearing from schools across the country and he updated JCFootball.com on things including what he's focused on this summer as well as what schools might be close to extending an offer.

"I'm a playmaker and I love to play against the run," Watts told JCFootball.com. "I like to pursue and play sideline-to-sideline and diagnose plays so I can make the tackle."

As a freshman at Butte, Watts put up impressive numbers notching 43 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, five sacks and one blocked kick while earning First Team All-Nor Cal honors.

"They blitzed me a little bit and I got to rush the quarterback a lot, but it was always from a stand-up position," Watts said. "I'm mainly a weakside linebacker, but it doesn't really matter to me. Some teams are looking at me at defensive end and some are looking at me as a linebacker. As long as I can get on the field, that's really what is important to me."

To go along with his outstanding production, Watts has excellent physical skills, posting a 4.56 forty time, a 36-inch vertical and a 340 pound max on the bench press.

"This summer I'm all about my footwork and technique," Watts said. "I'm really good at attacking, but I'm working on my drop-step and getting into coverage. I can run with backs and slot receivers, but I really want to be able to be even better than I have been."

On the recruiting front, Watts is hearing from schools across the country, but as of yet he doesn't have any offers.

"Ole Miss wants me at defensive end," Watts said. "Arkansas, Washington, Middle Tennessee, Oregon State, Nevada and Utah are the other schools looking at me.

"I'm open to everyone and since I'm taking 12 units this summer, I should be able to sign with a school in December and that has really helped me get noticed by more and more schools."

Wherever Watts ends up, he'll have three years to play two once he steps on campus.
