Team Preview: College of San Mateo

The NCFA is loaded with talented teams every year and one squad that has more than its share of top prospects is College of San Mateo. Defensive coordinator Tim Tulloch has quite a few defensive prospects that should make his job relatively easy, but he also took the time to let us know the Bulldogs offense also has several prospects to make opposing coaches sweat...

"We were happy with our season last year and this year we think we should be pretty strong up front on both sides of the ball again," Tulloch told JCFootball.com recently. "We have some young guys that we're really excited about and then the guys we have returning, especially on our defense, are really good and we're expecting big things from them."

Here are the top prospects on San Mateo's roster and some players who people should keep an eye on this fall...

RB Daniel Porter "He's gonna play running back for us. He's 6-0, 190 pounds and he's consistently clocked in the high 4.3 range for us and he's incredibly strong and incredibly fast so he's the full package and he's got a great stride so at times he looks like he's just gliding along, but eventually he's just running past guys and breaking down angles. He's powerful and he can run inside or outside.

"We've really emphasized him catching the ball out of the backfield during the spring this year and he's picked it up great. We didn't do a lot of that with him last year, but we think he's going to do well for us there. He's got great hands and he picks up blitzes well.

"We expect him to have a big year and last year he had over 100 yards per game in league and in our league, that's pretty impressive. He'll be a big-time player for us and he'll be one at the next level and he's probably our top offensive prospect."

RB Tony Carasco "He transferred back to us after walking on at Oregon State. He'll play a lot in the backfield this year. He rushed for 100 yards in a game two years ago in the Pac 10. He's a smaller, more powerful, guy who goes 5-9, 185 and he should have a nice impact for us this year. He'll be a mid-year guy who will have two to play two."

QB Wes Price "He's 5-10, 180 pounds and he's incredibly smart and a coach on the field kind of a guy. He can run and he can throw and he's smart at reading defenses and gets us into the right plays. He'll be ready mid-year and he'll be three to play two."

QB J.T. Ramos "He's bigger (6-1, 205) than Wes and he's more of a gun-slinger with a strong arm and he played in several games for us last year. J.T. is smart as well and he played in a couple of games for us last year and it will be fun to watch the battle between those two this fall."

OG Anthony Arellanes "He'll play guard for us this year. He's big and physical and he can down block really well. He's strong and really well put together and he can drive block really well. If it's a short yardage situation we usually run behind him because we know he's mean enough and physical enough to move the pile."

C Jake Orth "He's a full qualifier. He'll graduate in December and he's 6-2, 290 and he'll play center for us. He started 11 games as a freshman at tackle and we just moved him inside so we could feel sure that our center could get the snaps down and handle the inside guys we face every week like the guys from Butte.

"He could be really successful almost anywhere along the line, but we feel he'd be better suited to play guard at the next level and he's already on quite a few schools' radars."

DE/DT Jamie Fehoko "He's 6-3, 275 now and he's a guy who can win one-on-one matchups and get to the quarterback and he's really disruptive against the run. He's going to play end for us because we're a 3-4 defense, but he could play a three-tech and he was better than Bernard Wolfgramm as a freshman and if he continues to improve the sky is the limit for him."

DT/NT David Hafoka "He had an infection in his calf and he medical redshirted for us. They couldn't figure out what the problem was and when they finally figured out what was wrong, we had lost the season. He will graduate in December and he'll be a three to play two.

"He's your power, anchor-down, nose guard that will demand double and triple teams and he'll hold the point and collapse the pocket for you.

"I think he has a trip set up to Utah during the bye week and he's got a lot of other schools looking at him."

DT Semi Fauolo "He's 6-4, 300 and he's a transfer from Sac City and from watching him in the spring and watching his film from high school, we think he's going to be something special for us.

"He'll play strongside defensive end and then David will be in the middle and Jamie will be out on the rush end side."

OLB Ratu Rabela "He's 6-2, 225 pounds and he's really fast and he's fearless. He's a real ‘go get the quarterback' type. He's a big-play linebacker for us."

OLB Bentel Bolden "He runs a 4.6 forty time at 6-2, 230 and he and Ratu will take Andre Portis and Kurt Filler's old spots. They just make plays and cause serious problems for offenses."

MLB Matt Taufoou "He is the younger brother of Williams Taufo the fullback at Cal and he's a real instinctive linebacker. He's your 15 tackles a game type linebacker. He has a real nose for the ball and he really reads plays well and makes the right adjustments for us."

MLB Mateus Porter "He is Daniel's brother. He has great speed and he's really athlete. He's the strongest guy on our team. He's unbelievable in the weight room. He's 6-2, 220 and with his athleticism he could play outside if he needed to. He can run and he's really physical."

S Terence Simien "He was an 11 game starter for us. He's 6-3, 205 pounds and he runs really well for a big, long and strong kid. He's got great instincts. He had 18 tackles against Butte last year and he only had one pick last year, but he had chances at a bunch of others and he just didn't make the play because he just missed it. He was in great position and I think a lot of that was just because he was a freshman and this year I think he'll bring those home."

S Julian Burroughs "He's 5-11, 180 pounds and he played at College of the Desert and he started and played for them. He's sort of a corner/safety and we're going to move him around and play him some in the nickel and stuff like that."

CB Richard Wilson "He's 6-3, 190 and he runs really well and he's a guy that can match up well against the big receivers at the next level. He's big and he's physical and he's fun to coach because he just gets it."

CB Warren Zeigler "He and Damien Owens went to high school together and now Damien is the starter over at Fresno State and everyone thought Warren could be at that level or higher and he'll be a mid-year guy as well. He's 6-1, 175 pound kid. He redshirted last year and he'll play for us this year."

CB Glenn Pettis "He's smaller, but he's solid at 5-9, 175 pounds and he's also a punt and kick returner. He could make a roster doing either thing. He's got incredibly quick feet and he's a guy you can tell him to go stick the slot guy and he'll lock that guy down.'

Other San Mateo players to watch: WR Danny Keenan; CB Dajon Green; OL Joe Perea; S Anthony Baker; DE/DT Alec Williams; P/K Ernesto Lacayo.
