One visit down and two to go for Russell

We've been tracking the recruitment of L.A. Pierce CB Chaz Russell (6-0, 200) all summer and it appears he might be getting close to a decision. However, he's still got two more official visits on his agenda and this weekend he'll be on campus at a Big East school who came into the picture very recently.

"I got offered by West Virginia this week and I'm going to be there this weekened," an excited Russell told JCFootball.com. "That was a big offer for me because their coaches said they really liked me a lot and with my size, speed and aggression, they think I'd fit into their system really well."

This past weekend Russell was in Ohio, visiting Akron and he said he couldn't have had more fun.

"I had a blast there," Russell said. "They had some really cool players up there and they showed me around and they showed me a good time.

"Dennis Kennedy and Brian Williams were my hosts and they showed me the facilities and then the staff sorta showed me what they are trying to build up there with the players they are bringing in."

In addition to the Zips and the Mountaineers, Memphis is the other school on his travel itinerary.

"After I go to West Virginia this weekend, I'll be in Memphis," Russell said. "They are a school that's been on me for a while and I definitely want to check them out because they are an up-and-coming program."

Russell had hoped to make it out to Manhattan, Ka. to check out Kansas State, but it appears he will not make an official visit to check out the Wildcats.

As a freshman in 2007, despite missing one game because of a hip injury, Russell still managed to post 35 tackles, 11 passes broken up and one interception while playing corner for the first time in his football career.

Whichever school he decides to sign with, he will have four years to play three the moment he arrives on campus for fall camp.

Russell plans to make his decision very soon after he gets back from his visit to Memphis, so we'll have more soon as he wraps up things and gets ready to make his decision.
