Evering makes a name for himself at Foothill

One of the more talented JC wideouts who has been flying under the radar this year is Foothill WR Chris Evering (6-0, 180), but make no mistake, he's a playmaker when he gets the ball in his hands. He's older than most JC players, but that added maturity and his honed skills make him an intriguing prospect and several four-year programs have already let him know they are interested.

Evering prepped at Miami Northwestern, one of the powerhouse programs in the state of Florida, where he enjoyed a standout career on the gridiron, but following his graduation in 2002, he decided to get a job and forget about football.

But after five years of the real world, Evering got the itch to play ball again and he started looking for a place to play some college football.

"My brother actually was already out at Foothill playing and he wanted me to come out and play with him," Evering recalled recently. "Getting used to the west coast is a little bit different, especially the weather because it's cooler out there than it is out in Florida."

As a 23 year-old freshman at Foothill in 2007, Evering had a solid season, posting 48 receptions for 678 yards and seven touchdowns while amassing over 1,200 yards of total offense including punt and kick returns.

This summer, Evering has been working hard on his speed as well as his strength.

"I run a 4.4 forty time, but my acceleration can always get better," Evering said. "I like to run inside routes as well as go-routes, so that acceleration out of my cuts is really important, so I've been working on my explosion and my flexibility as well."

On the recruiting front, Evering has been hearing from several four-year schools who are interested in his all-purpose skills.

"I've been hearing a lot from New Mexico, South Florida, Hawaii and Nevada," Evering said. "Kansas State and Utah have also told me they like what they saw this spring and that they will be watching me this fall."

Evering will finish his AA degree in May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll continue to track his progress as the season gets underway and update news as it happens.
