Stop me if you've heard this before.
And if you've followed AVC football, you have.
The Marauders gave up big pass plays for touchdowns, a punt return for a touchdown and struggled on offense as they lost their third straight game to a National Conference opponent.
The Panthers got on the board when Aaron Mays returned AVC's first punt 86 yards, then pushed the score to 10-0 after getting a field goal after a Marauder fumble.
Eddie Russ Jr. then returned that kickoff 88 yards to close the score -- it was Russ' second TD kick return of the season.
But just that quick Travis Hutchinson took the pitch and threw to Aaron Mays for a 74 yard TD and it was 10 points just 17 seconds later. Mays had five catches on the night for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while five Panthers passed for a 12 for 27 night for 229 yards.
The Panthers made the score 24-7 by half time on a Mark Chase two yard run. For Chase, who was 11th in the state in rushing, it was a six carry for 42 yard night, well below his 118 average. In fact, Tyler Thompson had the bulk of the rushing carrying 12 times for 72 yards.
As the third quarter was coming to a close, Devon Whitson took a three yard pass from John Perez in for the score and it was AVC closing in to 10.
Perez came in the night as the back-up quarterback and was third on the depth chart to open the season. But an ankle injury to starter Rodney Dorsette and spotty play by Saturday's starter Westen Pursley, forced Perez to come into the game. He was nine for 18 on the night for 72 yards.
Dorsette wasn't the only Marauder out with injuries -- two of the starting offensive line were out of the game.
But Chaffey decided to freeze out the Marauders on the very next play when a heavily and well covered Mays found a way to contort himself to score on a 48 yard pass from Gregory Sprowls and, just eight seconds later it was 17.
AVC gave up 352 yards on defense -- 229 of those passing, and still haven't gotten to the 200 mark on offense, picking up 192 over all.
Big plays help Chaffey in win over AVC
