Pace holds it down for the Road Runners

A versatile playmaker in the secondary is always a nice thing to have and Butte DB Preston Pace (6-1, 195) is a man who fits that bill perfectly. He rotates in at corner and safety for the Road Runners and this weekend he'll be in the starting lineup at free safety. He's already got several schools interested in what he has to offer and he's hoping a big season will result in some offers...

After a standout prep career at Boca Ciega High School in Florida, Pace was be recruited by schools from across the country, but he was unable to receive a qualifying test score and he was directed to California by several coaches in order to continue his football career.

"They all told me the best football was played in California, so that's why I headed out here," Pace told on Thursday afternoon. "It's definitely been a change coming out here for me, but honestly, I'm having fun and I like it up here at Butte."

As a freshman at Butte in 2007, Pace worked mostly at corner as well as at safety and he posted solid numbers -- 28 tackles and two sacks.

"They played me at corner a lot, but they also played me some at strong safety," Pace noted. "It wasn't really a true strong safety position because we play a 'Bear' defense, but I played pretty close to the line and they used me on blitzes and just wanted me to make plays.

"I'm an aggressive, shut-down corner and I like to get my hands on guys before they get into their routes. I feel comfortable playing man-to-man, but I can play zone as well."

On the recruiting front, the Florida-native doesn't have any offers yet, but he's receiving some heavy interest from school across the country.

"South Florida, Minnesota, Kansas State, New Mexico, Oregon State and Michigan are all schools I've been talking to," Pace said. "I had a visit set up with USF for the week of our bye (October 11th), but they wanted to push it back, so they want me to visit the first weekend of December."

Pace is set to graduate in May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

This weekend he and his Butte teammates will host Redwoods at John Cowan Stadium.
