Price mulls things over

This past spring it was thought that Blinn LB/DE Jarred Price (5-10, 210) had committed to Cal, but he said that wasn't the case. The gifted pass-rusher said he's got the Golden Bears near the top of his list, but he's hoping to set up some visits after his season is over so he can make a decision soon thereafter. caught up with Price recently and he updated us on things...

After a standout prep career at Madison High School in Dallas, a career that saw him register 24 sacks in one season (that's not a typo), Price had quite a few programs looking at him, but when they found out he wasn't going to qualify, they backed off.

"I had SMU looking at me pretty hard, but I wasn't going to qualify," Price told recently. "Blinn was the school I wanted to go to because I knew a couple of guys up here and it was still pretty close to home and they are always a top team."

With his less-than-prototypical size, Price redshirted his first season at Blinn while trying to add muscle to his frame. In 2006 he played behind a couple of sophomores but he saw more snaps every game.

"Basically Jarred is lighting in a bottle," Blinn defensive line coach Keith Browning told this summer. "Jarred has the fastest first step I've ever seen and he can flat out get to the quarterback. He had 12 sacks last season as a freshman."

So far this season, Price is off to a fast start, posting 20 tackles and three sacks while helping to lead the Buccaneers to a 3-1 record.

Because of his ability to get to the quarterback, schools from across the country have either offered or they have made it known they are keeping their eyes on him.

"I have eight offers right now," Price said. "Actually it's seven and one that is on the way. I have offers from Kansas State, Kansas, Ohio, Arizona, California, Kentucky and Alabama State.

"Boise State has offered both me and our other defensive end Travis Stephens, but we haven't gotten it in the mail yet."

Earlier this year, it was believed that Price had committed to Cal, but he said that isn't completely true.

"Basically, Ohio offered me and then Cal came in with an offer and I told the coaches there that I really liked them a lot," Price said. "Then I got a call from a reporter asking me about it and he sorta twisted my words a little bit and put out there that I had committed when I really hadn't.

"Cal is right up there at the top for me. They are in my top three along with Kansas State and Kentucky, but right now I'm not committed to anyone and I'm going to take my visits before I decide anything."

Price is on pace to graduate this December and he'll have two years to play two wherever he ends up but he noted he might have to delay things if he were to commit to a Big 12 or an SEC school because of the classes needed to transfer.

"If I were to go Big 12 or SEC I would need a couple of different classes, so I wouldn't be done until May," Price said.

This weekend Blinn tries to rebound after their loss to Kilgore last weekend by taking on Tyler this weekend.

We'll have more from Price in the coming weeks and months as he begins to take his visits.
