Amazing Performances in Canyons' Win

Hayo Carpenter (PHOTO) celebrated his 21st birthday by not only returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown but also by setting a new Canyons school record for receiving yards in a game as the #2-ranked Cougars (6-0, #2 in the JC Grid-Wire) trounced Northern Conference rival Moorpark (3-2), 48-3, Saturday night in Santa Clarita.

Fred Winborn also tied a pair of school records by scoring 4 touchdowns as Canyons led wire-to-wire.

Carpenter, who set a COC school record with 16 catches in a game last month vs. LA Valley, finished with 12 catches in this one for 221 yards, eclipsing the former mark of 214 set in 1998.  And Winborn tied a school mark he already shared with 4 rushing TDs in a game.  That gave him a 2-year total of 29, tying another school mark.  And though he didn’t set any new school records, quarterback Brad McClellan also had a spectacular night with 296 yards passing and 158 yards rushing in the Cougar rout.

Canyons took control of this game early on, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter.  Carpenter began the game by staking the Cougars to a 7-0 lead when he returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.  Then he helped set up the next three scores with 6 catches for 162 yards in the opening quarter alone.  The Canyons defense did the rest, holding Moorpark to just 3 points, 9 first downs and less than 200 yards of total offense.

After Carpenter’s touchdown to begin the game, Moorpark answered with a 13-play drive that ended with a 36-yard field goal by Jorge Vazquez.  That cut the Cougar lead to 7-3.  But that would also be the last time the Raiders would score all night.

Canyons answered with a quick drive featuring two passes to Carpenter (for 20 and 19 yards) and a 14-yard scoring run by Winborn.  Then after a Moorpark punt, Carpenter put COC in scoring range again after a 47-yard catch, getting the ball to the Raider 12.  Winborn scored on the next play to make it 21-0.  Then after another Moorpark punt, Carpenter took a screen pass from McClellan, eluded a tackler and sped 57 yards to the Raider 9.  Two plays later, Winborn scored again, this time from the 4, to make it 27-3.

After that, the Canyons defense, led by standout defensive end Marquis Jackson, made sure the Cougars already had more than enough points.  Moorpark only entered Cougar territory once more all night, and then for only one play before an 18-yard loss and a punt.

Carpenter extended the Cougar lead to 34-3 when he took a short pass from McClellan, sped to the outside and dove into the right corner of the end zone in the waning seconds of the first half.  Canyons increased the margin to 41-3 when Winborn scored his 4th touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run to cap a 10-play drive midway through the third quarter.  And McClellan scored on a 1-yard run to cap an 11-play drive midway through the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

With the win, Canyons improves to 6-0 entering a road game next week at Glendale.  Moorpark falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference and will host Bakersfield next Saturday.
