Guarascio holds down the middle fo Canyons

College of the Canyons is once again atop the California JC ranks and one of their leaders on defense is Joey Guarascio (6-3, 230). The playmaking linebacker is having an outstanding season after being slowed early on by a high ankle sprain and he's hoping his performance will result in some D-1 scholarships very soon...

Guarascio hails from Florida and was a late qualifier, so he missed out on some scholarship offers right after high school.

"I had to get my SAT up and by the time I did, all of the offers I had had been taken by other guys," Guarascio lamented. "I had offers from South Florida, Central Florida, Florida International and Florida Atlantic, but it didn't work out and when Canyons found out about me, they were the ones who really showed they wanted me so I came out here."

As a freshman, Guarascio played the strongside linebacker position for the Cougars and posted 56 tackles while starting nine games.

This season Guarascio is playing his more natural position at the middle linebacker position and he's thriving.

"I had a high ankle sprain early on and I missed the first four games, but now I'm 100% and I'm having a lot of fun flying around," Guarascio said. "It's fun being right in the middle of things, making calls and I have guys on the outside of me so I'm not worried about holding my leverage outside, I can just attack."

One the recruiting front schools like Boise State, Oregon State, Akron and New Mexico are the four schools making the most contact right now.

"My coaches talk to a lot of schools about me, but those are the four that I've spoken to," Guarascio said. "I'm not scheduling any trips until after our season, that's my focus right now, so I'll worry about recruiting after that's finished."

Guarascio is on pace to graduate in December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
