Garrett still waiting for an opportunity

San Joaquin Delta WR Garrett Andrews (6-3, 205) was one of the top JUCO receivers in California this year, but he still doesn't have a home. caught up with the gifted pass-catcher recently and he updated us on things including which former Notre Dame receiver he models his game after...

"Jeff Samardzija is a guy I always liked and felt like I played like him a lot," Andrews told "I had the long hair and I played ball the same way so he's definitely a guy I would compare myself to."

As a sophomore, Andrews had a big season for Delta posting 59 receptions for 959 yards and 10 touchdowns while earning first team All-Conference, All-Region and All-State honors.

"I'm a physical guy and people see me that way, but this year I got a lot more deep balls than I did last year," Andrews said. "I also got a lot of short stuff on screens and I also take pride in blocking downfield and cracking-back on the linebackers and defensive ends.

"Another thing is I have deceptive speed (a 4.5 forty) and quickness because I'm a big guy, so people are really surprised when I run by them instead of just getting physical with them."

Andrews said the only D-1 school to even show him any interest was Sacramento State, but things never materialized with an offer.

"They went a different direction, so I'm just sorta in limbo right now," Andrews said. "I have a bunch of D-2 schools looking at me, but right now I'm just going to school and working out."

Andrews completed his AA degree in December so he's available to leave at any time and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
