Amelita dominates inside for Santa Ana

One of the men tasked with paving the way for the Santa Ana ground game is Ruurd Amelita (6-2, 340) and the naturally strong lineman takes pride in his run-blocking abilities. JCFootball.com spoke with Amelita recently and he talked about recruiting and what he thinks sets him apart from some of the other JUCO players at his position...

Amelita, who's first name is pronounced "Rude", was a standout at Foothill High School in Santa Ana and he was so successful on the football field that he didn't get his work done in the classroom.

"That was tough," Amelita admitted to JCFootball.com. "It was a tough lesson to learn, but it showed me I can't mess around. I want to play college ball and I can't do that if I don't get it done in (the classroom) first."

Amelita chose to play for the Dons after careful consideration and said he's focused on improving his overall game.

"I'm strong and quick for my size," Amelita said. "I bench 405 and I'm really quick off the snap which helps me against D-linemen.

"I love to run block. That's what I do best, but I'm going to work real hard on my pass-blocking. I'm good at it, but I want to get better. I definitely run-block better right now."

"This is just a natural football player in a 345 pound frame," Santa Ana head coach Geoff Jones said recently. "We give a 'big hit of the game' (award) and I think he won 7 out of the 10 weeks last year.

"He shows up to play every game and he will be a huge impact guy at the next level, maybe on either side of the ball."

On the recruiting front, schools from across the country have just begun to inquire about Amelita's services.

"Nebraska, Cal and Iowa State have all been in contact and a bunch of other schools have sent mail," Amelita said. "It's still real early on in the process so I'm just going to be patient, but I'm looking for a good environment and a good coaching staff that cares about their players."

Amelita has a solid GPA and is on pace to graduate in May of 2010 when he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
