Lots of early interest for Holmes

Bookend tackles are always in short supply and one of the nations best at the JUCO level heading into the 2009 season is Itawamba OT Lamar Holmes (6-6, 330). The huge lineman who holds down the right side for the Indians and he's become very popular with four-year programs. He received his first offer recently from a Conference USA school and he updated JCFootball.com on where things stand...

"I got an offer from Southern Miss a few weeks ago," Holmes told JCFootball.com recently. "They have been on me for a while and they were the first one to step up with an offer so it was cool.

"Auburn and Oklahoma State are both on me and they told me they like my run-blocking a lot, but they haven't offered me yet."

With the early offer was Holmes inclined to commit?

"I want to take my time and see who offers me," Holmes said. "I only get to do this one time and I need to make sure I find the right place for me and a place that I can at least challenge for playing time.

"I want to take some visits in the fall and do all the research I can to make sure I know everything I can. Then I will feel like I can make my decision."

As a freshman in 2008, the freshman held down the right side of a line that rushed for over 184 yards a game, only managed to win three games.

"Last year was tough, but we'll be stronger this year," Holmes acknowledged. "We got tougher as the season went on and this year I think we will be a lot tougher for the teams that face us."

In addition to ideal size, Holmes also possesses good strength numbers and speed, notching 350 pounds on the bench, 480 on the squat and a 5.2 forty time.

Holmes is on pace to graduate in December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
