Amelita shines at So Cal combine

Santa Ana OG Ruurd Amelita (6-2, 340) has been a busy man this spring. He's been hard at work in the weight room and the classroom and last weekend he took part in the JCFootball.com So Cal Combine at Orange Coast College and was one of the dominant players in the one-on-one session the linemen held in one corner of the stadium. JCFootball.com got an update on how recruiting is coming along...

"Things have been going good," Amelita told JCFootball.com after he finished off a solid day on the field. "Cal, UNLV and Auburn have been sending a lot of stuff and Auburn has been calling my coaches a lot and making sure I'm doing good in school.

"Nebraska has been calling a lot too, so there are a couple of new schools for me and a lot of schools are sending mail and telling my coaches they will be out to watch our spring practices and stuff."

Amelita had a solid day testing, posting a 5.4 forty time and he did 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press before a minor shoulder injury caused him to finish earlier than he had expected.

"My shoulder kind of gave out on me, but it's fine," Amelita said. "I just didn't want to strain it anymore than I needed to and it was fine for one-on-ones."

In the one-on-one session, Amelita squared off against some of the top interior pass-rushers from southern California and more than held his own.

"Mt. SAC came to play today," Amelita acknowleged. "At first they were just dominating everybody, but after I got warmed up I got mine.

"It was a lot of fun because when you can get out here with the best JC guys in the country and do well, it always boosts your confidence."

We'll have more from Amelita in the future, but he verified with JCFootball.com that he is on pace to graduate in May of 2010 and he'll have three years to play two after this season.
