Kates makes the call

After flying 6,000 miles in three days to take part in the So Cal JCFootball.com Combine, Erie CB Andre Kates (6-0, 193) felt he had proved himself enough and when an offer from the Indiana coaching staff came in he decided to end the recruiting process to play his college ball in the Big 10. He called on Sunday evening and explained why he ended things so early...

Kates had offers from all across the country including Memphis, BYU, Baylor, Buffalo, Washington State, Maryland and Miami among others, but when he sat back and thought about things, his offer from Indiana made the most sense to accept.

"At schools like Florida, North Carolina and Miami they already have a lot of guys there at corner and they have a tradition," Kates told JCFootball.com. "At Indiana I could come in there and play right away and that was something that meant a lot to me and they are a 'basketball school' so I think I could be a guy to come in there and help them establish a football tradition."

Kates had a solid freshman season in 2008 when he managed to total 49 tackles and three interceptions in his first season of playing defense.

"The coaches at Indiana want me at corner and they said I have a chance to come in and play right away," Kates said. "They were actually pretty surprised when I called and told them I wanted to commit.

"I called up coach (Joe) Palcic and when I said 'hey coach, I'm coming to Indiana' he was like 'this weekend?' and I was like 'no coach, I want to come play for the Hoosiers.'

"He was a little in shock over me committing to them because I think they thought I was headed to Miami, but after he understood I was committing he was really happy and excited."

Kates had a very good weekend in southern California at the JCFootball.com Combine held at Orange Coast College. He posted a 4.41 forty time, a 4.09 short shuttle, a 33-inch vertical and he did 22 reps of 185 pounds on the bench.

He'll graduate in December and he'll have three years to play two once he arrives in Bloomington.
