Brooks will play for the Jayhawks in 2009

It seems a little late for additions to D-1 rosters, but Kansas picked up an All-American JUCO linebacker in Blinn LB Vernon Brooks (6-0, 230). got the heads up from the talented linebacker who was a late qualifier and he talked about things including why he ended up signing with the Jayhawks...

Brooks enjoyed an All-American season in 2008, posting 76 tackles, 24 tackles-for-loss, eight sacks and three forced fumbles for the Buccaneers as a redshirt sophomore.

Many assumed because of his clock he would need to go D-II, but in the end he qualified.

"I didn't get my stuff from the Clearinghouse until just real recently," Brooks told "A lot of schools thought I was going to have to go D-II because of my clock, but I ended up qualifying so that's what happened."

Once schools started to find out about his eligibility, Brooks saw offers come in from several including the school he ended up signing with -- Kansas.

"Tulsa, UAB, Tennessee and Kansas all offered me and Oklahoma was going to offer me, but I decided to sign with Kansas," Brooks said. "At those other schools I wasn't real sure what my role was going to be.

"I'll head up to Lawrence next weekend and get there on Sunday July 5th. I'm excited to get it started and I know I will have an impact for them."

Brooks will have two years to play two including this season.
