Mackey makes the most of his opportunities

He's one of the top JUCO signal-callers in the country and East Mississippi QB Randall Mackey (5-11, 180) knows where he wants to sign this fall, but that hasn't stopped schools from across the country from showing him the attention someone with his multitude of skills warrants. JCFootball.com caught up with Mackey recently and he updated us on things...

"I've just been chillling and getting ready for the season," Mackey told JCFootball.com. "I've been running a lot, doing 7-on-7's and the other offseason stuff to get us ready for the season.

"I want to have a big sophomore season and I think I have a real chance to do that, but we have to put the work in to have that happen."

As a freshman in 2008, Mackey was named the MACJC/Region 23 Offensive Player of the Year and was the Region 23 MVP while leading the NJCAA in passing yards (281.8) and total offense (330.4) per game. For the season he threw for 2,818 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing 60% of his passes, and rushed for 486 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games.

"I can run around and make plays with my legs, but I like to throw the ball more," Mackey said. "I felt like once I got the offense down that things came pretty easily for me. I know that won't always be the case, but I had a good season and that's what I want to do this year."

Ole Miss placed Mackey at EMCC after the talented quarterback was unable to qualify and he feels a loyalty to the Rebel staff because of that.

"They treated me well and placed me at the right school," Mackey said. "The coaches here are great and I like the offense they have here. I plan to re-sign with them in December after I finish up my classes and so I can be there next spring to take part in things."

Just because he's publicly stated he plans to head back to Oxford, that doesn't mean schools from across the country haven't showed him plenty of interest.

Schools from the Big 12, the ACC, the SEC as well as from Conference USA have all made it known they like what they see from the talented signal-caller.

As mentioned earlier, Mackey will sign in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2009 football season.
