Broncbusters' Bergin has potential

One of the players up front for Garden City that will help pave the way for their offense is OL Mike Bergin (6-3, 305) and got the scoop on how his offseason has progressed and what he's focused on to make himself into the best player he can be...

Bergin prepped at a small high school in Nebraska and only played one year of eight-man football, so it has taken him some time to get used to the game as well as the speed. However, he's been hard at work this summer and that could pay dividends down the road.

"Last year I played left guard or left tackle most of the time, but I didn't start," Bergin told recently. "I was the first guy off the bench, basically the sixth o-lineman, so this is the year when I will need to show what I can do."

To go with his solid size, Bergin has also gotten it done in the weight room, posting a 340 pound max on the bench press as well as a 525 squat and a 315 pound "hang clean".

"I have good feet and strength," Bergin said. "It's just been about getting used to things at this level and making sure I have my assignments down. I've been really working on my overall game this summer, just to make sure I'm ready for what comes this fall."

On the recruiting front, Bergin hasn't received much in the way of interest other than letters from some smaller schools, but he's hopeful a good season will show recruiters he has what it takes to be successful at the next level.

Bergin is on pace to get his AA degree next May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
