Team Preview: Kilgore College

The Kilgore Rangers had a bit of a down year in 2008, posting a 6-4 record and losing in the first round of the postseason to Blinn, but the hope of the coaches is a group of experienced players along with an influx of talented freshman will help get them over the top and JCFootball.com was lucky enough to speak with linebackers coach Jordan Lesley about some of the top prospects on their roster…

CB Jimmy Anderson "He's definitely one of our top guys on defense. He's a little on the short side, but he plays bigger than what his listed height and weight are (5-9, 160). He's got outstanding quickness and speed and he can cover almost anyone and he really plays well in space. Last season he had eight interceptions and he was a pre-season All-American. He's someone we will depend on a lot this fall."

CB Greg Jordan "He's bigger than Jimmy and almost as quick. He's solid out in coverage and pretty much in the same mold. We have two really good corners so we're excited about that. We expect a lot of good things out of both of them."

LB Christopher Myers "He's out starter at middle linebacker and he's a real good story. He was a walk-on for us and he ended up earning himself a scholarship. He's a tackle-to-tackle guy. He's got great instincts and he runs well. He's our guy right in the middle."

LB Joseph Schumpert "Joseph is probably our best defensive guy. He's not very big (5-11, 200), but he's real physical and just makes plays all over the place. He's got a great combination of speed, athleticism and instincts. We put him in space and just let him have at it."

DE Kedy Enabulele "Kedy is a really strong kid and he's got a lot of athleticism. He plays our strongside defensive end position and he really did a great job there last year. He's already getting a lot of interest already. He's shorter, but he works his tail off and he's a great kid all the way around. He's another one we expect big things from."

DE Matt Jones "Matt was our best defensive lineman last fall. He came to us from Fort Smith, Arkansas and he played safety in high school, so you know he's a good athlete who can run. He's now at 6-2, 260 and he plays our weakside spot, but he could play as a standup defensive end or a linebacker too, that's how athletic he is. During our spring scrimmages he had something like 15 "sacks" so we're expecting a monster season from him this fall."

DE/DT Benay Pryer "Benay played at Gulf Coast College in Mississippi last year and then transferred to us and we couldn't be happier. He's real solid and very versatile because of his size (6-2, 290) and athleticism. He's going to play a major role for us this fall."

C Junior Kautai "He's a little on the short side (5-11, 292), but he is our best offensive lineman and he's just a bulldog. He really gets after guys. He's hard nosed, he's quick and he's really smart so we rely on him a lot to make the proper line calls. He came to us from a great high school program at Trinity (Euless, Tx.) so the kid knows how to win. He's getting a lot of interest from 1AA schools. I think he could play at the D-1A level, but his height is probably going to scare people off."

WR Chris Tate "We switched him from DB to wide receiver where we will use his speed and size. He's done a good job of adjusting to the switch and we think he's going to have a big season. He can really run and he creates a ton of mismatches just because he can fly right past defensive backs."

TE Jordan Scroggins "Jordan came to us after he was at North Texas and he's a really good blocker. He's done a great job in that aspect and will really help out our running game, but he's also a pretty good receiver so he isn't one-dimensional."

TE Chase Ford "When you talk about athletic tight ends, Chase fits that mold perfectly. He was a wideout in high school and weighed about 215 then, now he's up to about 245 and this spring he ran a 4.5 in the forty. He's the whole package at tight end just because of the way he can block and then he creates mismatches with not only linebackers, but safeties too. He caught some balls for us last year, but this year I think he's going to have a breakout season."
