San Mateo's Aknin talks recruiting

Last year, San Mateo RB David Aknin (6-1, 215) split time with one of the top JC runners in the country, but this year the job is all his and he hopes to make the most of his opportunity. JCFootball.com recently spoke with the powerful runner and he updated us on things including what he has to offer schools should they decide to offer him...

Aknin enjoyed a solid prep career at Carlmont High School in Belmont, Ca., but he didn't get a lot of recruiting attention and it was a relationship with one of the defensive line coaches at his high school that helped him decide where to go to continue his football career.

"One of our D-line coaches also coached up here at San Mateo and he is the one that really sold me on the place," Aknin told JCFootball.com. "I can't say enough good things about this place. It's been a blessing to me with the coaching, support and the talented guys we have here."

As a freshman last fall, Aknin took a back seat to Daniel Porter who signed with Kansas this spring, but he still managed to post over 500 yards on the ground while leading the team with 11 touchdowns.

"I'm a guy who does the most work between the tackles, but I have enough speed (4.46) to bounce it outside if I need to," Aknin noted. "I love to get the running game going, the power running game and just taking it right at the opposing defense."

Aknin hasn't gotten a lot of recruiting attention early, but he hopes a big sophomore season, where he is the main weapon in the wide-open San Mateo attack, will show D-1 football programs what he brings to the table.

"Arkansas and Washington have both sent me some letters and a few other schools have sent some too, but nothing is really coming in right now," Aknin said. "I think this could be a big year for us and me and I think people will like what they see if they give me a chance to show what I can do. That's what I'm hoping for anyway."

Aknin is on pace to graduate this December and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

The Bulldogs take on De Anza this Saturday at home.
