Blinn's Stephens talks recruiting

Blinn pulled off a huge upset this weekend when they downed undefeated Navarro to secure a place in the National Championship game in a few weeks. Buccaneer DE Anthony Gonzales (6-5, 260) was one excited prospect when JCFootball.com caught up with him on the bus ride back to school, but he calmed down enough to give us an update on recruiting…

"We won man, we're going to the national championship," were the first words out of Gonzales' mouth when we reached him. "It was a great game. Navarro is tough, but we showed why we are such a great program and we won the game. It's real exciting and we're going to the championship game man."

Gonzales plays on the strongside and uses his large frame and long arms to both stop the run as well as get after the quarterback finishing the season with 37 tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss and 7.5 sacks.

"I'm good at stopping the run, but I feel like I'm best at rushing the quarterback," Gonzales told JCFootball.com shortly before his sophomore season got underway. "I learned a lot from Travis Stephens (who signed with Kansas) in how he approached the game and how he did things and what made him so tough to block."

Gonzales already had several offers to his name and one from a Pac 10 school could be coming in the very near future.

"I haven't set anything up yet, but I've been talking to Arizona about visiting this coming weekend," Gonzales said. "I'm not real sure right now, but since we have a few weeks off before we have to play in the championship game, I think that is what is going to happen.

"UAB, Tulsa, Kansas, Kansas State, Utah, North Texas, Houston and Southern Miss have all offered me and they are the other schools I'm thinking about visiting. West Texas A&M also wants me to come over for a visit so that's another one I will probably try and check out."

We'll have more from the talented defensive end in the very near future as he has plenty of time to make his decision since he won't be able to sign until February. He'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
