Mahoney set to visit Tempe this weekend

One of the more physically impressive JUCO defensive tackle prospects in California this year was L.A. Pierce's David Mahoney (6-2, 295) and this weekend he will be in Tempe to visit Arizona State. caught up with the talented interior defender and he updated us on where things stand...

"I'm going to Arizona State this weekend," Mahoney told Tuesday afternoon. "I was supposed to visit Texas Tech this weekend, but I'm going to head there on the 17th for a few days."

"Coach (Matt) Lubick is the coach recruiting me for them and he said I'm a perfect fit for their style and their system."

This season Mahoney was stout in the middle of the Bramah defensive line, posting 35 tackles, eight sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss while playing both the nose and the three-technique defensive tackle spot.

Mahoney has offers from across the country, but his top five -- Arizona State, Tennessee, West Virginia, Texas Tech and Florida International -- are the schools that have already gotten or will get a visit from him in the very near future.

"Arizona State is a good school academically from what I've heard and it's all about football there," Mahoney said. "Their coaches there have been successful at a lot of places and they take football seriously there at ASU. I'm really excited to see the school and the campus up close and to meet with all of the coaches."

Mahoney said he plans to sign in February with a school and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
