Mountain West visit on tap for Gaines

This weekend, City College of San Francisco DE Frank Gaines (6-3, 250) will be visiting the first school to extend him an offer. Could a commitment be far away? caught up with the talented pass-rusher and he updated us on things...

"I'm going to be visiting Wyoming this weekend," Gaines told "I know it's going to be cold there, but I can handle it. They offered me and their coaches really seem to like me and want me there.

"I've only seen snow once in my life and then it wasn't like I could go out in it and stuff, but I guess on the trip I should see a lot of it because I guess there was a blizzard there earlier this week. It'll be fun though. A new experience that's for sure."

Gaines had a solid season for the Rams this fall, posting 52 tackles, nine sacks and forcing two fumbles after totaling 32 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss and four sacks as a freshman in 2008.

"I had a good season and we did pretty well as a team, but we just didn't win the big one we needed to," Gaines said. "San Mateo is tough and I think they have a great shot at winning it all, but they have a tough game this week against Mt. SAC so it should be good.

"I really improved and felt like I did really well with the added strength I have. I played weakside and strongside for us. It just depended on the alignment of the offense and stuff like that.

"I want to be an all-around end, so I can anchor well against the run and use my quickness to get inside a block before they can get their hands on me so it allows me to make a play."

Schools like Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona State all came calling early, but things have slowed down with them. At this point Wyoming and several WAC and Mt. West programs are his suitors now.

"I'm open to anyone, but this Wyoming visit should be fun," Gaines said.

He's on pace to get his AA degree in May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
