Atkins is still waiting for a D-1 offer

He's one of the more athletically gifted wideouts out there, but College of the Canyons WR C.J. Atkins (6-3, 210) is still waiting for that all-important first offer. caught up with the talented receiver and he udpated us on things including which two D-1 schools are very likely to get a visit before it's all said and done...

"I had an okay season I guess," Atkins told "It took us a while to really decide what type of an offense we were going to be. I didn't get a lot of looks, but when I had the chance to make plays I did what I could with the opportunities and now I'm focused on what will happen next for me."

Atkins signed with Washington State out of high school, but left there once the coaching staff changed two years ago.

He enrolled at COC last year hoping to make a new start and ended up playing mainly defense in 2008. This year he moved to the offensive side of the ball and hauled in 14 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown while playing almost every receiver position.

"I played out wide and out of the slot," Atkins said. "They used me a lot in different ways so I think I could play anywhere and be successful."

Contributing to Atkins' future success will be his outstanding athleticism. He posted a 4.38 forty time during the spring and sports a 38-inch vertical to go along with solid strength numbers as well.

Syracuse just got a commitment from one of Atkins' teammates -- OT Louiszell Alexander -- and the Orange are in the mix for another in TE Mychal Rivera and they've begun to show some heavy interest in Atkins as well.

"They said they like me speed and my athleticism and how I can return kicks and punts too," Atkins said. "I'll probably visit them the first weekend recruits can visit (January 8th) and then Hawaii has asked for my transcripts and wanted to look things over, but they said they will probably want me to come out the second weekend to visit them.

"I don't have any offers yet, but things are picking up a little bit and Oregon and Arizona State have also called and talked to me and my coaches."

Atkins will sign with a school on February 3rd and he'll have two years to play two wherever he ends up.
