One visit left for Pierce's Mahoney

He fast became one of the most sought-after JUCO defensive linemen in the country, but L.A. Pierce DT David Mahoney (6-2, 285) still isn't ready to make his decision. On January 8th, the big interior defensive line prospect will take his final official visit and then he'll sit down with family to make his decision on where he will continue his college football career...

"I've taken four of my trips and I'll go to Florida International next weekend," Mahoney told Monday afternoon. "I'll visit them and then I'll make my decision a week or two after I get back."

This season, the talented defensive lineman, who could play either inside or outside, posted solid numbers from the Bramahs posting 35 tackles, eight sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss.

"I'm strong at the point," Mahoney said. "That's really what schools like about me and I have a quick first step so I can get penetration against the pass or the run and cause problems."

While Mahoney is getting close to making his decision, he did take the time to give a heads up on what it is about each of his favorites that has allowed them to rise to the top of his list...

Tennessee - "Basically, with them, it's the coaching staff, plain and simple. They have a Hall-of-Fame staff that I know could get me to the pros if I went there. At this point, I'd say they are my number one, but because of the SEC requirements for JC players, I might not be able to play there since they require an extra Math and English class. I'm taking those classes right now and I'm doing fine with them, but you never know with admissions people so that might be an issue."

Washington State - "I loved the people associated with Washington State. The team was great and they really had a bond over there. I really like the defensive line coach there, coach Malik (Roberson). He and I talk all the time and they said they really need a player like me up front."

Texas Tech - "I just visited there and they really impressed me. The visit was real interesting because it really showed me what their program is about. My cousin plays there so I'd already know someone there. They are just a few plays away from being a top nationally ranked program right now, so that really helps."

Florida International - "I haven't visited there yet, so right now all I can go by is my love for the coaches there. They are all great and I really want to see their program up close. They were the first to offer me and they call me all the time and they show me how much they want me and need me. After I visit them I think I will have a better understanding of their program."

Mahoney will sign with a school in February and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll have more from him after his FIU visit in two weeks.
