Panelli signs with top FCS program

For the past two seasons, Modesto QB Greg Panelli (6-3, 230) has been one of the top passers in the California JUCO ranks. He almost left last summer, but when recruiting interest waned he decided to play one more season with the Pirates. On Wednesday, the talented signal-caller got his first offer and next fall he'll be playing ball for FCS-power Eastern Washington...

Panelli had an outstanding freshman season when he completed 58% of his passes for over 2,200 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions while leading the Pirates to a 8-3 record.

This past season he was even better, completing 60.4% of his passes for over 3,000 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading his team to the Graffiti Bowl where they defeated San Jose Junior College 54-13.

The talented passer was being heavily recruited by New Mexico State, but the Aggies decided to go with another JUCO quarterback, however, Eastern Washington head coach Bo Baldwin decided to pull the trigger this week and Panelli snapped up the offer almost immediately.

"I just committed to Eastern Washington," a relieved Panelli told JCFootball.com. "Coach Baldwin was excited and he said with their quarterback graduating that there was time available and that I could come in and compete for that starting job.

"He said they run out of the spread a lot, which fits me just fine since I did that at Modesto the past couple years and he felt I would be a good fit for them and that they would be a good fit for me."

Panelli is a solid student and was a full-qualifier out of high school. He'll have three years to play two once he arrives in Cheney early next week.
