Ventura's Nelson signs with UTEP

Ventura OT James Nelson (6-7, 335) finally got some good news last weekend when he took his official visit to UTEP. Head coach Mike Price offered the big and athletic offensive lineman and on Tuesday night he made his commitment to the Conference USA school...

"I met (Price) about a month ago and he said he would be recruiting me," a relieved Nelson told JCFootball.com Wednesday morning. "He and I touched base last week and he asked me when I could get up there for a visit and I said I could do it last weekend so I headed up there and met with them and got to see the school and meet the other players and stuff.

"It was a real good time and I really enjoyed it there. On Monday, after I got back, they called me and said they were offering me and that I would be getting my offer from them soon and that I should look it over with my family.

"Then last night I called him and said I was committing and I signed my paperwork and faxed it in today."

Nelson is a good athlete, running a 5.2 forty at 325 pounds this summer, and because of that he's played both tackle and guard for Ventura this season.

"The coaches at UTEP told me they wanted me for either tackle spot and I'm fine with that," Nelson said. "I've played all along the line so it shouldn't be a problem for me playing on either side of the line."

Because he was a full-qualifier out of high school Nelson can sign at any time and because he is likely to receive a medical redshirt for last season he'll have four years to play three.

Nelson said he plans to enroll next week and will be able to take part in spring football when it starts in March.
