Lewis headed to Toledo

Grand Rapids DT Phil Lewis (6-2, 285) is one versatile football prospect. He played almost every position along the defensive line during his two years with the team and recently two D-1 schools took enough notice to get him on their campuses for official visits and extend him offers. Now that he's taken both trips, he decided to stay close to home and sign with Toledo...

Lewis prepped at Grosse Pointe South High School in Michigan, but was unable to qualify out of high school.

"Grand Rapids and College of Dupage were the two schools wanting me to come and play for them," Lewis told JCFootball.com recently. "I wanted to stay closer to home, so Grand Rapids was the best choice for me so my mom could come and watch me play and it's been a good decision for me."

Lewis has outstanding quickness and strength posting a 335 pound bench press and a 550 pound squat this past summer. He used those traits to post 57 tackles and 10 sacks this year as both a nose tackle and a three-technique defensive tackle.

"Sometimes I played the three and sometimes I played the nose, it just depended on our call," Lewis said.

Coaches from D-1 schools showed Lewis a lot of interest after the season finished, but it was Toledo and New Mexico State that were the most serious.

"I visited Toledo the week before last (1/8) and then last weekend I visited New Mexico State," Lewis said. "Both of them offered on my visits and I really enjoyed seeing both of those schools, but in the end, Toledo was just the place for me.

"The coaches there are really great, it's close to home for me and I feel like they have a great chance to win the MAC in the couple years I'll be there. That just made it the best fit for me."

Lewis already has his AA degree and had hoped to enroll at Toledo early. He said he's still checking to make sure he can sign and be on campus for spring football.

Whether he enrolls early or not, Lewis will have three years to play two once he steps on campus.
