Hussey hopes versatility attracts suitors

Long-snapping doesn't draw the same recruiting attention that some other positions draw, however it is an integral part of special teams and one of the best in the California JUCO ranks this past season was Moorpark's Chris Hussey (6-4, 215). spoke with the versatile athlete and he updated us on things...

Hussey prepped at West Albany High School in Alabany, Oregon and didn't get much in the way of recruiting attention.

"I had some friends who played (at Moorpark) in 2007 and 2008 and they said it was a good place to go and I should check it out," Hussey told recently.

Hussey was a regular position player in high school, but once he started practicing with Moorpark, he picked up the skill of long-snapping.

"One day I was just goofing around at practice and was long-snapping to some of the other guys and one of the coaches saw me," Hussey said. "After watching me do it a few times he said 'ok, you're going to be our long-snapper'. It was a surprise to me because I had never done it before, but he said I was good at it and I needed to keep doing it.

"I guess anything around .7 seconds is what the pros want and I've been timed at .74 so I've gotten some attention because of that, but not a lot at this point."

Hussey has mainly had D-2 programs talking to him, but none have stepped forward with an offer.

"It's just sort of a waiting process for me right now," Hussey said. "I'm willing to do anything a team needs me to do. I just want to keep playing because I love playing football and I think I could be a real asset to a program."

In addition to his long-snapping skills, Hussey is also a solid receiver, hauling in 35 receptions for 401 yards and a touchdown and over half of his receptions (18) resulted in first down conversions.

Hussey already has his AA degree and is able to leave at any time. He will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
