Victor Valley DB makes a name for himself

A defensive back getting quite a few early looks from four-year schools so far this spring has been Victor Valley CB Dontra Matthews (6-3, 195). He's got the ability to play man-to-man or even move back to a safety position and that versatility has some schools intrigued...

Matthews prepped at Leesburg (Fl.) High School and actually committed to Auburn over offers from ACC and other SEC schools. However, he was unable to qualify so he began looking into JUCO programs.

"One of my coaches knew some of the coaches out here," Matthews told recently. "It's a lot different out here because it's so much dryer, but I've gotten used to it and I'm enjoying my time here."

Last fall as a freshman DB for the Rams, Matthews posted solid number, racking up over 40 tackles and posting one interception, two forced fumbles and three blocked field goals to go along with 10 passes defensed.

"I'm phyiscal and I like to play man-to-man, bump-and-run," Matthews said. "On thing coaches like about me is that I like to come up and hit. That's just my mentality. You need to be physical to be successful nowdays at corner."

Matthews said there has been some discussion of him possibly moving to free safety, but he prefers to stay at corner if at all possible. However, this fall he said he's hoping to get some looks at wide receiver for the Rams to use his size and explosive speed -- he posted a 4.4 forty time last fall -- to put up some points.

"However I can get on the field, that is what I will do," Matthews said. "I'll do anything to help my team win."

On the recruiting front, Auburn continues to keep in contact with Matthews and he's heard from Kansas State and UCLA so far as well.

"I'm open to everyone," Matthews said. "I'll be looking at playing time, but also the program and how I get along with the staff and the players."

Williams has to take a full load of classes this summer in order to be able to sign in December and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
