Harbor DT could leave this summer

Every year, stories begin to emerge about JUCO players who could sign late and have an impact during the fall. One such player is Los Angeles Harbor DT Puncho Aiono (6-2, 300), but he told JCFootball.com recently that he isn't thinking about that possibility right now. Instead, he's focused on the start of spring football and how he can help his team this fall...

Aiono was a beast inside for Harbor last weekend leading the team in tackles-for-loss with 12 while posting 49 total tackles and four sacks in 10 games.

"I play both the three-technique and the nose tackle spot, but I mainly was a three," Aiono told JCFootball.com. "I prefer the three because I like to rush the quarterback and get penetration off the snap. I like to be disruptive and get in to make plays.

"It helps my team and it causes a lot of problems for the offense."

As a senior at nearby Banning High School, Aiono wasn't heavily recruited, so he decided to head to Harbor off of the recommendation of his prep coaches.

"They said Harbor was a good school and it was still close to my home, my family," Aiono said. "It's been the right place for me. My coaches are great and I really feel like I'm getting better all the time."

Aiono's head coach, Brett Peabody, told JCFootball.com that one of his most talented players could end up signing this summer and be available to a team this fall.

"My coaches just told me that, but honestly I'm not really thinking about it right now," Aiono said. "I haven't even talked to schools yet. I'm just wanting to do well in spring football and also make sure I do well in school. The rest of that stuff will take care of itself."

According to Peabody, Aiono has schools like San Jose State, Louisiana Tech, Boise State, Hawaii and Washington eyeing him for possibly enrollment this summer.

Should Aiono sign with a school in the next few months, he would have four years to play three wherever he ends up. If he returns to Harbor and plays this fall, he would be able to sign in December with three years to play two.

We'll keep tabs on Aiono's progress and update news as it happens.
