Garden City DT getting early looks

Four-year schools are always looking for athletic JUCO defensive line prospects to plug into their depth and one that is already getting quite a bit of recruiting attention so far this year is Garden City DT Maurice Couch (6-2, 295). His athleticism is off the charts and he said his versatility is what makes him a menace to opposing offensive linemen…

Couch prepped in Orlando, Florida, but when he was unable to qualify, he decided he needed to get away from the distractions of the Sunshine State and head to the middle of Kansas where he could concentrate on football and school.

"Basically it was about the opportunity to play and to just focus on school," Couch admitted to "I liked what they had to offer here. I could get away, see some different things, play against some of the top JUCO teams in the country, I mean, it was the best situation for me."

Couch redshirted last fall, so this will be his first taste of college football, but he expects to play the three-tech defensive tackle spot in the Broncbusters' defensive line rotation, using his 4.9 speed, 355-pound bench press and 450-pound squat to cause problems for opposing offenses.

"I like playing the three because I can rush the quarterback, which is what I think I do pretty well," Couch said. "I can stop the run well, but every lineman wants to get sacks and get pressure on the QB and that's what I do best."

Because Garden City sports several good prospects this year, a parade of D-1 programs have been through and Couch has talked to several including Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Southern Mississippi, Eastern Michigan, Kansas State, Kansas and Louisiana Tech among others.

"I'm interested in anyone that wants to recruit me," Couch said. "I'll play wherever and in whatever scheme they need me to. I just want to play and feel comfortable enough to feel at home. That's really what I'm looking for."

Couch is on pace to finish his AA in May of 2011 and he'll have three years to play three wherever he ends up.
