Stafford makes plays in Chaffey's secondary

A JUCO defensive back getting a lot of early attention from four-year programs this spring is Chaffey S Daimion Stafford (6-0, 210). The heavy-hitting, yet versatile prospect spoke with recently and he updated us on where things stand regarding recruiting and what makes him such a formidable player for the Panthers…

"My speed and my footwork are really pretty good and that helps me a lot," Stafford told recently. "I mean, you always have stuff to work on, but I'm pretty versatile and I have good technique, so it's more about just getting stronger and reading plays and things like that."

As a freshman last fall for Chaffey, Stafford finished second on the team with over 50 tackles while also leading the team with four interceptions and he did it playing both safety positions.

"It sorta depended on what the offense we were facing that week did best," Stafford said. "If they were a passing team, then I played free safety, but if we were playing a team that ran it really well, then they put me closer to the line, down in the box so that I could use my tackling up there.

"I liked both, so it really doesn't matter to me where I play. I just like getting out there and competing."

On the recruiting front, the talented safety said that two Big 12 schools are leading the way at this point.

"Iowa State and Nebraska are really standing out right now," Stafford said. "Iowa State is a good program and they've offered me, so that's a big plus for them, but Nebraska, I mean, they are a traditional power and with them showing me interest, I really like them a lot."

Other schools who have been turning up the recruiting heat have been Oregon State, Boise State and Arizona as well.

Stafford said he'd like to get out to visit some of the schools he visits before he decides, but he's on pace to graduate in December so he's hoping to do it sooner, rather than later. Wherever he ends up, he'll have three years to play two following the 2010 season.
