Bennett says yes to Houston offer

Navarro is loaded once again with talented prospects up and down their roster and one that has already received a couple of early offers is CB Chevy Bennett (6-1, 195). This past weekend he visited Houston and after careful deliberation, he's decided to make a commitment to the Cougars and will sign with them in December...

Bennett prepped at Sachse (Tx.) High School and signed with North Texas, however he was unable to qualify and headed to Navarro to get things in order.

"The program here and the coaches, that's why I decided to come here," Bennett told "Every day in practice, you play against great players and the coaching you get is great, plus they get you ready to move on to the next level, so it was the best move I could have made."

As a freshman last fall, Bennett played corner for the Bulldogs and posted 18 tackles and two interceptions.

"I'm physical and I think I can play whatever coverage teams need me to play," Bennett noted.

This spring, schools from across the country flocked to Navarro to take a look at all of the top prospects on their team and several noticed what Bennett could do and two made offers.

"North Texas offered me because they still wanted me, but I just wasn't feeling it anymore there," Bennett said. "Then Houston offered and I really liked them a lot already, so I visited them last Friday for one of their Junior Days, even though I'm not really a junior anymore.

"I went up there and met with the coaches and talked with them. Then I came home that night and talked to my family and when I got back up to Navarro I talked with the coaches and just felt like it was the right place for me, so I called coach (Mike) Sumlin and told him I wanted to commit."

In addition to those two offers, Bennett said he is also hearing from Baylor and New Mexico, but neither seemed close to offering.

Bennett is on pace to finish his AA degree in December and he will have three years to play two once he arrives at Houston in January.
