Lantrip makes surprise commitment

Early this summer, as compiled a list of the top JUCO offensive line prospects, Itawamba OT Houston Lantrip (6-3, 295) was a player who immediately came to mind. He already had some early offers and had some BCS schools with their eyes on him as well. It was thought he would be playing for ICC this fall, but things changed recently and he signed last week with a WAC school...

"I committed and signed with Louisiana Tech last Thursday (July 15th)," an excited Lantrip told Sunday afternoon. "I just got up here and I had my physical, so I'll start working out with the team on Monday."

In addition to his offer from Louisiana Tech, Lantrip also had offers from Florida International and Troy and was getting some interest from Mississippi State and Arkansas.

"I was going to wait, but I was talking with my family about it and they said they thought I was wasting my time at a JC if I could play D-1 ball right now," Lantrip said. "I loved my time at Itawamba, but I didn't want to wait, so I called up Louisiana Tech and said I wanted to get there and start playing."

Lantrip prepped at South Haven (Ks.) High School and was a very good student as well, however he wasn't recruited to play D-1 football, so he decided to head to the best program he could find in order to earn some scholarship offers.

As the left tackle last fall at Itawamba, Lantrip admits he was probably a better pass-blocker, only allowing one sack all season.

While he isn't quite as proficient at run-blocking, he said he's good at getting to the second level and can adapt his game to a zone-blocking scheme that allows him to use his athleticism and speed to get into linebackers and safeties.

"They have two really good and experience tackles here already, so I'm not really sure where the coaches want me to start out at," Lantrip said. "I do know I'm going to start out taking some snaps at center, just so I can make sure I'm able to go in wherever they need me to be."

Because he's only played one year of football, Lantrip has four years to play three starting this season.
