Smith signs with Nicholls State

He didn't get a lot of attention from four-year programs after not playing the game of football until his junior year of high school. However, former El Camino WR Keenan Smith (6-4, 202) finally found a home with a FCS program and is already enrolled and taking part in camp...

"I got offered by Nicholls State and was getting some attention from Memphis, but I decided to end things and sign," Smith told between workouts. "I got here a little while ago and we've been through a couple practices already and I'm getting ready for the season right now."

Smith was a prep at Carson (Ca.) High School and enjoyed a solid career there, teaming up with Dominique Blackman there to lead the Colts to a deep run in the playoffs as a senior in 2007.

"I didn't even start playing football until I was a junior," Smith recalled. "I had a breakout season as a senior when I had 43 catches for 659 yards and six touchdowns.

"I wasn't a qualifier because I had failed a class and didn't retake it over summer school. I would have, but I didn't even know I could have done that, so I headed here to Elco to get things right and to got a scholarship to a D-1 school."

As a freshman in 2008, Smith was still feeling his way through things, hauling in 10 receptions for 110 yards in spot duty. However, last fall he put up solid numbers behind top-JUCO wideout Kenbrell Thompkins, finishing with 26 receptions for 380 yards and three scores.

"Kenbrell got most of the looks, but that just meant I had to take advantage of things whenever I got the chance," Smith said. "I have good speed (4.47) and my height helps me against smaller corners."

Besides being his only offer, Smith said he felt the Colonels' program was one that he could thrive in.

"I liked the staff a lot and just felt like they could get the most out of me," Smith said. "I liked the area and the school, so it was the right fit for me."

Starting this season, Smith will have three years to play two for the Colonels.
