Vargas makes a name for himself at COS

College of the Sequoias DT Damen Vargas (6-2, 285) had a solid freshman season in 2009, posting 44 tackles and six sacks, but he wants to have an even better 2010 season. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented defensive line prospect and he updated us on how his offseason went and which schools took an early interest in what he had to offer...

"The offseason was good," Vargas told JCFootball.com. "I just lifted with my team and worked out and got ready for the season.

"Now we're in two-a-days and working to get ready for the season and I expect us to be a lot better than we were last year and I personally think I'll have an even better season that last year."

As a redshirt freshman, Vargas was solid for the Giants, finishing seond on the team in sacks with six and fourth in tackles with 44.

"I can play tackle or end, it really doesn't matter much to me," Vargas said. "Here, I mainly work at the three-technique (defensive tackle) spot so that I can rush the quarterback, but honestly it's all about how I can help my team win and if that means I have to play end or nose tackle, then I'll do it."

Schools made the trek to northern California to watch COS practice this spring and two schools spoke directly to Vargas in May.

"Iowa State and New Mexico State are the two schools I've talked to," Vargas said. "They both seemed to like me at tackle and how I played.

"Oregon State didn't talk directly with me, but they spoke to my coaches about me and got my film, so they are a little interested too."

With no offers yet, Vargas knows he needs a solid 2010 season in order to amp-up interest and he said he's put in the time to do so.

"My bench is at 335 pounds, my squat is at 435 pounds and for some reason my hanging clean is more than my bench at 380 pounds," Vargas said with a chuckle. "I want to have a huge season, not just for me, but for my team. I think we can have a special season."

Vargas was a solid student at Hanford (Ca.) West High School before he enrolled at Sequoias and will finish up his AA degree in December. Wherever he ends up he'll have two years to play two following the season.
