Sims leads Ventura attack

Ventura QB/ATH Antavius Sims (6-2, 210) is a player to watch this fall. He put up solid numbers last season for the Pirates and is already off to a good start this season leading them to a 44-21 win over Moorpark on Saturday. The talented signal-caller already has one offer under his belt and with a big 2010 campaign he could be looking at a slough of other offers coming in...

Sims prepped at Americus (Ga.) Sumtner High School, but was unable to qualify for a scholarship at a four-year school, so after searching around he settled on Ventura.

"I liked the coaches here and I love it out here on the west coast," Sims told over the weekend. "My parents wanted me to stay closer to home, but I wanted to get away from things there and see a new part of the country and after I talked to them, they gave me their blessings and I haven't looked back."

As a freshman last fall, Sims took over the reigns of the Pirate offense and hit an 57.6% of his passes for 1,327 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions and rushed for 579 yards and 10 more scores while leading them to a 7-4 record.

"I'm a quarterback who can run," Sims noted. "I worked really hard this summer on being more of a pocket-passer and reading defenses better, but I'm a natural thrower and I feel like I have a great feel for playing the position."

So far, the only school Sims mentioned when asked which programs are showing the most interest is the one that has offered.

"Florida International offered me in the spring," Sims said. "I've been talking to them pretty regularly and I will probably take a trip out there soon.

"My coaches have been talking to a number of schools and I've been getting a lot of letters from schools, but nothing really worth mentioning right now."

Sims said he's on pace to finish his AA in May and he'll have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
