Dear Editors:

We appreciate your recent articles that address the challenges faced by our Nation’s veterans, and the care that they receive from both government- and private-sector providers.  We write today to express our opposition to H.R. 1162, the “No Hero Left Untreated Act.”  The bill would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to begin a demonstration project (pilot program) to use a medical device to provide a new form of magnetic e-resonance therapy on the brains of veterans who have a wide range of mental health diagnoses.

The maker of that device still is in the process of conducting an initial research study to establish the safety and efficacy of both the device and this treatment.  There is no device using this technology that currently is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for these uses.

We believe that the bill amounts to a government-sponsored clinical trial.  We believe that we owe it to our Nation’s veterans to offer them only safe, effective, research-based care
