It took me a while to come up with the name... but it finally came to me... Moose Stubing!!!
I'm pretty sure I saw him referee some Long Beach State basketball games back in the day.
Bingo BBSteve. Good memory. Moose did division 1 basketball from at least from the late 70's until 2001. Couldn't find anything on when he actually started or retired from basketball.
Moose was hired by the Nationals as a "special assistant" to Jim Bowden in 2006 (after being let go by the ANgels) . Moose was a player, a hitting coach, a 3rd base coach, a scout, and a short term manager for the Angels. Moose is 79 now, and with Bowden gone, his baseball career may be over. Last I heard, he lived in Wickenburg, Arizona and was still making it over to Arizona Fall League games.
Moose was quite a character, on and off the fields and arenas. I remember during Spring Training in Palm Springs....back in the day....and we would go over to the auxiliary field with our lawn chairs where Moose would be running some lame bunting drill for the pitchers....and Jimmie Reese would be feeding balls (and sometimes bats!) into the spinning pitching machine. We would actually sit inside the fence just outside the 1b dugout. Moose would always carry on some banter with us. During breaks he'd come over and sometimes begin regaling us with stories of him and the legendary Irv Brown (basketball official), meeting women in bars and telling tales that they were sheepherders from Australia and the like. Of course, my friends and I were in our teens and thought he was hilarious.
Couldn't find a picture of Moose in his referee garb....but did find him in a feature article of Referee magazine.
That's Moose up in the right corner with a brew in his hand. And the feature article is along the top-
"Share a Cold One with Moose Stubing"
More trivia- Bruce Benedict and Moose Stubing are the only MLB players to ref NCAA Division 1 basketball....I'm pretty sure.
OK, back to BBSteve's clue!
I played two years for the Angels and later ended my career with the team I originally started with...
