Angels California League All-Stars Shine

For two Angels prospects, a simple Tuesday night became one to remember as the California League All-Stars defeated the Carolina League All-Stars.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Baseball is played every single day of the year. Whether it be in the backyard, local park, high school field or Major League Ballpark, every single day, someone, somewhere is playing baseball. However, there's one day each year that seems to stand out above the rest. Each professional baseball league from the Class-A level or above hosts an All-Star Game once a year. This year, two Los Angeles Angels prospects found their way into the respective class of the 2015 California League All-Star Game at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

LoanMart Field of Rancho Cucamonga, California, plays host to 70 home games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and countless others just outside the main park, where three softball fields surround one of the best stadiums in Minor League Baseball.

On Tuesday, June 23rd, LoanMart Field played host to one game. A battle between the most elite prospects in the California and Carolina Leagues. Most nights of the year, baseball is as simple as win, don't lose. But, on Tuesday night, Rancho Cucamonga saw a spectacular of players smiling, laughing, and enjoying themselves in the atmosphere of nearly 5,000 fans cheering for each and every individual.

Each year, coaches, general managers and broadcasters get a ballot and fill it with who they believe are the best players in their respective league. This year, two Angels prospects found their way to that list and earned a spot in the All-Star Game.

For Angels right-handed relief prospect, Michael Smith, who was not on the original All-Star roster, the announcement of being an All-Star came as a surprise. Inland Empire 66ers manager, Denny Hocking gathered his team together to make a special announcement for Mike.

"We were actually stretching on a Sunday game," said Smith, "and Denny Hocking came out and called us all together. I had no idea, and he told all of us and it was really cool. It's a lot of hard work that pays off, and it's great to be here and experience it, representing the Angels organization."

Smith earned his All-Star Game spot, after posting a 1.80 ERA in 30.0 innings with the 66ers in the first half. Though Smith doesn't come with the status of "elite" prospect, his arsenal has helped bring his name to the forefront of many prospect conversations. He's allowed less than one base runner per inning (0.833 WHIP), while striking out 8.4 per nine and walking less than one.

Smith had a security blanket going to the All-Star Game in his teammate and catcher for the past three seasons, Stephen McGee. McGee, who is known as a defensive catching standout in the Angels system, had his bat speak volumes in the first half, with a .299/.381/.402 slash and additional 12 runs and 18 RBI in 34 games.

"A lot of my success has been because of Stephen. I feel comfortable with him behind the plate, he's very smart and he knows how to call a good game. So to be here with him is definitely rewarding. It's rewarding to him and it's also a comforting thing because I get to throw to him in the game. That's definitely pretty cool."

Smith and McGee had the priviledge of working together for an inning. In the seventh, Smith allowed one run on three hits, while striking out a duo. The numbers did not speak for how well Smith matched up against the top prospects of the Carolina League. The inning was not about the numbers though, as Smith and McGee got to carry on a new part to their minor league story together as they look beyond Class-A and into to higher lurks of the minors and potentially, Major Leagues.

"It was great," said McGee. "Me and Mike have been on the same team the last three years. I know him, his tendencies, so the comfort was there and it was great having him out there. Having at least one face that I knew."

McGee finished the game off for the California League, and sealed the deal with the pitching staff in the California League's 9-2 victory over the Carolina League.

"It's awesome. Especially to be able to catch the last pitch of it, that was great. With those guys throwing, it makes it easy. They throw right where the glove is, they allowed me to call pitches and there's a reason they're all here. It was a lot of fun."

Aside from the 9-2 win for the California League, and a duo of Angels prospects being a large part of the game's success, the staff of the Rancho Cucamonga put together an event like no other.

Quakes staff kicked things off with a Home Run Derby for two fans to participate with the professionals. Despite neither of the "Joe's" hitting home runs in the actual Home Run Derby, the home crowd got a show from six of the top sluggers in the California and Carolina League.

Prospects from multiple affiliates sent balls deep into the trees and parking lot beyond the outfield fences in Rancho Cucamonga. The final saw Cleveland Indians prospect, Nellie Rodriguez, best Houston Astros prospect, A.J. Reed, by a final score of five to four. Los Angeles Dodgers prospect, Cody Bellinger was among those competing.

"It was weird," said Bellinger. "I haven't hit without a turtle in about four years. I was just trying to swing too hard, that's it, but I hit one and that's what I wanted. It was fun."

Bellinger has spent the entire 2015 campaign with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and was the obvious standout from the loud applause from all fans. 19-year-old, Bellinger is currently enjoying a season where he's slashing .273/.341/.516 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs, and a system leading 51 RBI.

"It's special. It's your home crowd, and it gives you extra energy and makes you wanna play to the highest level. These fans are great here and it was fun. I came in today and had about 50 fans asking for my autograph. It's like getting treated like a bigger leaguer. It's cool. Tons of guys asking to sign balls, and pictures, and take selfies."

The hosting Quakes continued with their spectacular event, moving on to pregame ceremonies that saw fireworks for all players, three flyovers, and a Pearl Harbor veteran throwing out a surprise first pitch, it was fun and exciting for all that attended, including those covering the game.

The game saw a final score of 9-2, going in favor of the California League, but fun was had from all.

"Man, it was awesome," said Michael Smith. "It was so much fun to get out there. I gave up a run but the atmosphere and experience was awesome. I think at first, I took it a little too serious, but after a batter or two, I started talking crap to Cody Bellinger, but it was really cool. Especially with Stephen McGee."

With the joy and happiness from all who attended and were a part of the event, Quakes staff expressed glee in their hard work paying off to create and assemble such an outstanding event. One in particular being Media Relations Member, Steve Granado, who expressed the hard work put in and the staff's excitement in the final result.

"Everybody in the Front Office was basically living at LoanMart Field for the last three weeks," said Granado. "The work ethic I saw was inspiring. Every single person involved deserves all the praise in the world for their hard work. I think it really speaks for itself by how many smiles there were at the ballpark tonight, including the players, coaches, and fans. I think it was a huge success and it's very rewarding to see how it all turned out, even with all the hardships and struggles. It made a lot of people happy and created a lot of lifelong memories."
