Angels Announce Opening Day Roster

Quick Notes on Angels' Opening Day roster

Over the course of a 162-game season, the 25-man roster will continually change. But, there's something special about hearing your name called on that first game of the season, taking the base line, representing your team as an Opening Day starter.

The Angels have completed their Opening Day roster two nights prior to taking the field in Oakland for game one of 162. Here is a full breakdown of those players that made the roster.

 

 

STARTING ROTATION:

 

Ricky Nolasco, RHP
  • Named Opening Day starter for Angels
  • 3.21 ERA in 73 innings with Angels in 2016
  • 3.32 ERA in AL West parks; 6.02 ERA in rest of AL parks

 

Matt Shoemaker, RHP
  • Career ERA of 2.95 in July-September
  • 3.3 fWAR in 2016 ranked 11th among AL pitchers
  • Did not pitch after 9/4 after being hit in head with line drive

 

Garrett Richards, RHP
  • Returning from successful stem-cell therapy to torn UCL
  • 7.7 fWAR ranks 15th among AL pitchers since 2014, despite missing most of 2016
  • Sat 95-97 MPH in final Spring Training start

 

Tyler Skaggs, LHP
  • Missed 2015 with torn UCL; pitched just 89 innings in 2016
  • 1.60 ERA in 39.1 minor league innings in 2016
  • 4.35 ERA when working with Carlos Perez

 

Jesse Chavez, RHP
  • 3.68 ERA in AL West parks; 5.28 ERA in other AL parks
  • Reliever in 266 of his 315 career games; has not started since 9/11/15
  • Averages just four stolen bases allowed per 162 games/650 PA

Jose Alvarez, LHP
  • Second lowest average exit velocity among MLB pitchers since 2015 (via Statcast)
  • Career low's in ERA (3.45) and FIP (3.11) in 2016
  • Allowed just two runs in final 20 appearances (17 IP) in 2016

 

Andrew Bailey, RHP
  • 2.38 ERA in 11.1 IP with Angels in 2016
  • Allowed base runner in each of final seven appearances
  • Six-for-six in save opportunities in 2016

 

Cam Bedrosian, RHP
  • Held second lowest ERA in July 2016 (0.97)
  • Did not allow run in 25 games from 6/3 to 8/2
  • Returning from embolus (blood clot) in throwing arm

 

Bud Norris, RHP
  • .163 opposing batting average in Spring Training 2016
  • 0.46 ERA in 19.2 IP at Angel Stadium
  • 3.74 ERA as reliever in 2016

 

Blake Parker, RHP
  • Recorded final 17 outs of Spring Training via strikeout
  • Designated for assignment four times over off-season
  • 127 ERA+ in 2012-13; 84 ERA+ from 2014-16

 

Yusmeiro Petit, RHP
  • 3.83 ERA in 307.2 IP since 2012
  • 2.30 ERA in 43 IP vs. AL Teams
  • One run allowed in 14 IP in Spring Training

 

J.C. Ramirez, RHP
  • 2.91 ERA and 137 ERA+ with Angels in 2016 (46.1 IP)
