Colon, Weaver to have rehab start with Quakes

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- On successive days the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will have two major leaguers making rehab starts at the Epicenter. Bartolo Colon will make a rehab start on Thursday and Jered Weaver will start on Friday.

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Bartolo Colon, currently on the 15-day disabled list recovering from a torn rotator cuff, will start Thursday night for the Quakes, the Angels announced today.

The Angels' Opening Day starter for the past three seasons, Colon encountered right shoulder inflammation in mid-April last season before landing on the DL for two months. He missed the final two months of 2006 with the rotator cuff injury. In 2005, Colon was 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA, winning the American League Cy Young Award. The Altamira, Dominican Republic native sports a career Major League record of 140-87 entering the 2007 season.

Thursday will be the second time in the past two seasons Colon has appeared in a Quakes uniform. He made a rehab start on June 1st last season at The Epicenter against Lancaster, pitching four innings against the Jethawks while yielding two hits, walking one, and striking out three. The Angels timetable for Colon has him returning to the big league rotation by the end of April or early May. Colon may make additional rehab starts with the Quakes or perhaps with Triple-A Salt Lake.

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Jered Weaver, currently on the 15-day disabled list recovering from biceps tendonitis, will make a rehab start Friday night for the Quakes, the Angels announced today. Last season, Weaver earned some consideration for the American League Rookie of the Year award after winning his first nine MLB decisions en route to 11-2 record and a 2.56 ERA in 19 starts following his promotion from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Weaver began his professional career in a Quakes uniform during the 2005 season. He joined the team in mid-June after the Angels drafted him 12th overall in the June 2004 draft. The Northridge, CA native made seven starts with the Quakes and posted a 4-1 record with a 3.82 ERA before being promoted to Class-AA Arkansas. The Angels timetable for Weaver has him returning to the big league rotation on April 16th against the Boston Red Sox. Weaver may make one additional rehab start with the Quakes or with Salt Lake.

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are the Advanced-A California League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and open their 2007 season this Thursday at 7:05 PM against the Lake Elsinore Storm. Great seats are still available for Colon's start on Opening Night, Weaver's Friday Night start, as well as all 2007 Quakes games. Call the box office at (909) 481-5252.
