Angels Draft Interview: Carlos Ramirez

Drafted by the Angels along with Steve Salas – a teammate of his at Chandler-Gilbert Community College – Carlos Ramirez was taken in the 34th-round – a catcher that caught 59.3 percent of the runners attempting to steal against him.

How are you feeling right now after having been picked by the Angels and were you expecting to be drafted by the Angels?

Carlos Ramirez: I feel great. This is the most exciting thing in my life. It was unexpected and I feel very good.

How did you find out?

Carlos Ramirez: My summer coach was looking at the draft through his cell phone and had found out. Then about five minutes later, the scout called me and told me the news.

Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Angels?

Carlos Ramirez: I'm more of an easy going player. I'm not an intense guy. I would say I'm more on the relaxed side. I just play the game. I'm more of a humble kind of person. I just go about my own business.

Talk a little bit about your relationship with Steve Salas.

Carlos Ramirez: We went to junior college together this past year. He was having some car troubles so he ended up living with me in my apartment and we became close friends. They call us the Mario brothers because we're always together.

How do you feel about getting picked by the same team as Steve?

Carlos Ramirez: I'm down with that. It's going to be exciting because I know who he is and it's going to be exciting to work together again.

Any weaknesses in your game right now?

Carlos Ramirez: In my mind I don't think so, but other people might have their own opinions about me. I could maybe get stronger. That would be my biggest thing.

Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so Angels' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Carlos Ramirez: Well, I idolize Jorge Posada and Ivan Rodriguez. But right now I like Russell Martin from the Dodgers.

Were you expecting to be drafted by the Angels or were you surprised when they drafted you?

Carlos Ramirez: I had talked to them before but when I heard my name, it was a surprise. I was in shock. I was like wow.

Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Carlos Ramirez: No, I don't see myself playing any other position. I've been catching ever since sophomore year in high school.

What's your time from home to second?

Carlos Ramirez: My time from home to second is 1.85 seconds.

What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Carlos Ramirez: My best moment in baseball would have to be my junior year in high school. We had two runners on and we were down by two, when I hit the winning run. My coach told me to show a bunt to make the team think I was going to bunt. My coach even pretended to get mad at me so they would think I was going to bunt. Then I hit it out of the park. That was very exciting for me.

Who was your favorite team growing up?

Carlos Ramirez: Boston Red Sox.

What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Angels? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

Carlos Ramirez: I'm looking forward to playing pro ball, but it all depends on the situation right at the moment.

What does your family think about you being drafted by the Angels?

Carlos Ramirez: They're very excited. We've never had anyone in the family get drafted. My mom's very proud of me. She's always been there for me and now that I've been drafted, it really makes her happy.
