Francis Martes, the Astros #1 prospect, has arrived. Martes was called up earlier this morning, and the expectation is that he will immediately start contributing from the bull-pen.
Its a bit surprising Martes was called up this early, as he has not looked great in eight Triple-AAA starts (5.29 ERA, 10.58 K/9, 7.79 BB/9).
However, Martes is considered to have elite frontline starter upside, as he has a potent tool-box of pitches. His weapons are similar to his new teammate Lance McCullers, as he boasts a mid-90’s fastball that peaks at 98 with a nasty power-curveball, and he also mixes in a change-up.
Originally acquired in the Jarred Cosart trade, Martes has rapidly climbed the ranks and established himself as a top-prospect for the Astros organization. Though he eventually projects as a starter, the Astros will let him get his feet wet at the Major-league level initially as a relief pitcher.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Astros want to see what they have in their young arm. It will be interesting to see how the 21 year old acclimates to the big-leagues.
