Astros Draft Profile: Joe Perez

With the 53rd pick of the draft, the Astros selected Joe Perez, a high school 3B from Bishop McCarthy High School. Many projected Perez would go as a right handed pitcher, but Tommy John surgery led the Astros to draft him as a third baseman. What should fans expect from the two-way threat?

With the 53rd pick in the MLB Draft, the Astros selected Joe Perez, a high school third baseman from Bishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Florida.

Perez was the 75th overall prospect according to Baseball America, and 93rd according to MLB Pipeline.

It's interesting the Astros selected Perez as a third baseman, as most projected him to go as a right handed pitcher. His fastball, described as one of "the most explosive" in the draft by, sits between 92-97.

But Perez sat out most of his high school season with shoulder fatigue, and is scheduled to undergo Tommy John Surgery after tearing his ulnar collateral ligament.

It appears Perez can hit, as youtube videos show a smooth, compact swing.

With a 6'3, 210 lb frame, he should be able to provide some power.

Interesting pick. Will it pan out? Only time will tell. Stay Woke.
