Anthony Recker Profile
The Oakland A's activated third baseman Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. To make room for Inge on the team's 25-man roster, Oakland optioned catcher Anthony Recker to Triple-A Sacramento. The A's also announced on Monday that they had placed reliever Neil Wagner on waivers and that he had been claimed by the San Diego Padres. Wagner had spent time with the A's and the River Cats this season, but he was with Sacramento at the time of his waiver claim.
By optioning Recker, the A's have made Josh Donaldson the back-up catcher to Kurt Suzuki. Donaldson began the season as the A's starting third baseman and had filled in at the position while Inge was on the DL. Donaldson has been a catcher for most of his professional career, however. He is expected to see time behind the plate, at third and a first base. Inge will serve as the A's third catcher, but he will only be used at that position in an emergency capacity. Inge began his big league career as a catcher, although he has mostly been an infielder in recent years.
Wagner's spot on the 40-man roster has yet to be filled officially, but it is expected that the A's will give that slot to Manny Ramirez later this when he completes his 50-game suspension. Ramirez is eligible to join the A's on Wednesday, although he may not be activated until later in the week. He is currently playing for Sacramento. A's rookie outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is also currently rehabbing with Sacramento and he, too, is expected to be activated later this week. Cespedes has been on the DL with a sore left hand.
