Chris Gimenez Profile
The Oakland A's announced on Friday that UT Chris Gimenez was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers. The A's now have 39 men on their 40-man roster. Gimenez was out-of-options coming into spring training and was a long-shot to make the A's 25-man roster with three other catchers already on the A's 40-man roster (John Jaso, Derek Norris and Stephen Vogt). The A's are expected to carry Jaso and Norris on their Opening Day roster, with Vogt starting the season with Triple-A Sacramento.
Gimenez, who grew up an A's fan, joins several former Oakland players on the Rangers' roster, including infielder Adam Rosales, outfielder Michael Choice, infielder Donnie Murphy, starter Colby Lewis, reliever Pedro Figueroa, reliever Alexi Ogando and infielder Andy Parrino. Gimenez is likely to serve as the Rangers' back-up catcher while Geovany Soto recovers from knee surgery. He is expected to miss at least two months. Gimenez can also play first base, third base and the corner outfield spots.
